Over two amazing weeks this summer, our course will use the tools of social and cultural psychology to explore a full century's worth of the things that that have made Europeans, European. We will dive into the beating heart of two global cities, walking each day where some of the most epic conflicts and vibrant cultural collaborations have shaped the world. We will see how political visions competed with each other to fly their flags over all the lands they could conquer. As we study two world wars, cultural and human genocides, and the legacy of how class conflict, imperialism, ethnic strife and battles for gender and sexual equity built the Europe we see today. Our classrooms will include iconic locations, from the British Museum to the Louvre. As we also incorporate places like London's "Little Jamaica" and the homeless camps around Paris' Gare du Nord into how and where we learn. Our intellectual reach will be toward the subtle fingerprints of culture that competed to move the chess pieces of power in our two cities. While we take time, too, to assess the power Europeans have built via the global exchange of beliefs, values, and ideas that have driven our understanding of science, progress, psychotherapy and the unconscious mind. 3 Credits in Social Psychology.
