Course Details

Preferred Majors for this Course: Pre-Med, Biology, Chemistry, Allied Health, Health Sciences, Psychology, History Infectious diseases are part of humanity's past, present and future. So are the dynamic medical and public health responses that bubonic plague, cholera, TB, malaria, AIDS and Covid occasioned in their eras. (Just to name a few.) Our class will walk the streets of London and Paris and the battlefields of the D-Day Landing Sites as we use historic locations and world-celebrated research centers to bring our material to life. As we study how doctors argued with each other over the nature of different diseases and struggled to build effective treatment protocols, we will explore the history of medical science in Europe from the late Renaissance to today. In conjunction with this theme, we will visit Omaha Beach in Normandy, France and explore the contours of how battlefield medicine sought to combat the ravages of infection. 3 credits in Biology.
